The People Care Planet Care Community Sauna

Tucked beside the Walpole Bay Tidal Pool in Cliftonville, Margate, the People Care Planet Care Community Sauna is quietly making waves. Free to access, built with love, and run by local volunteers, this seaside sauna has grown into something far more than a warm retreat – it’s a place where coastal wellness, community spirit, and eco-living converge.

What Is the People Care Planet Care Sauna?

This open-access sauna, formerly known as the Haeckels Community Sauna, is free for everyone to use. There’s no booking system and no ticket barrier – just turn up, step in, and enjoy the heat. Visitors are simply encouraged to bring firewood, fresh water, or small donations if they can.

The sauna was designed to honour Margate’s Victorian bathing culture – built in the style of an old sea-bathing machine, with timber wheels, weather-proof cladding, and a distinct minimalist charm.

A Vision Born From the Community

The sauna began life in 2014 as a crowdfunded community project, raising over £30,000 through Kickstarter. Each donor’s name is etched into the wooden walls, a permanent tribute to the local and global support behind the project.

Today, the structure sits proudly at Walpole Bay, where locals and visitors alike gather for warmth after cold swims, sea dips, or just for a break from modern distractions.

Eco-conscious and Designed to Last

Built to withstand the tough coastal conditions of Margate, the sauna uses ethically sourced wood from UK forests and relies on sustainable fuels. Even the ash from the stove gets a second life – it’s composted locally at Windmill Community Gardens, helping to grow fresh produce.

This makes the sauna not just a wellness destination, but an example of planet-friendly living in action.

A True Community Hub

What sets this sauna apart is its social impact. Without a fee barrier, it’s accessible to anyone, regardless of income or background. People come to meet, share stories, and feel part of something greater.

Many regulars describe it as a “zen space” – a place to unwind, reset, and connect. It’s not uncommon to make new friends, or even start relationships here.

In a survey, nearly half of all visitors said the sauna improved their social life, while over two-thirds reported feeling more connected to nature and their local area.

How to Visit

Visiting is simple – just turn up. There’s no need to book, and no hidden costs. The sauna is open throughout the year, making it a unique all-season experience in the UK.

Before you go:

  • Dress comfortably (swimwear or towel wraps are common)
  • Bring fresh water to cool down or clean off
  • Bring wood if you can – any sustainable fuel is welcome
  • Respect others and keep the space tidy
