The earth rotates on its axis every 24 hours. One-half of the earth faces the sun while the other half does not. The earth rotates counter-clockwise (anti-clockwise) which means a given location facing east will experience the sun first (sunrise) and then experience the sun go out of view (sunset) facing west. The Sun rises in the east and sets in the east.
